Episcopal Community Services...

Hunger and Jobs

"Feeding the Hunger and Changing Lives" through our Hunger Relief Network, plus Culinary Cornerstones Job Training for those with high barriers to employment.

Episcopal Community Services was founded in 1989.  We are a highly focused organization who collaborate extensively with other organizations to accomplish our two core missions.

First, we feed the hungry -- to homeless and precariously housed people, unemployed and underemployed, families, children and youth, seniors, veterans, and more.  Our extensive Hunger Relief Network includes community kitchens (soup kitchens), food pantries, meals-on-wheels, and specialized programs for seniors and children.  That network provided more than 1.2 million meals in 2012.

Second, we provide job training and employment assistance -- especially targeted for at-risk individuals who have significant barriers to sustainable employment.  Last year, 50% of our students had been in prison and were trying to turn their lives around.  One-third were single parents with children, some escaping abusive homes.  The Culinary Cornerstones Job Training Program provides classroom and in-service training for the food service industry.  We also provide life skills and career management skills.  Students graduate with Culinary Cornerstones certificate, ServSafe certification, CPR certification and a Food Handlers card.

Our Cornerstones Catering social enterprise initiative provides in-service training for our students, transitional employment while graduates are securing stable employment, and advanced culinary training for graduate students and interns.  In addition, all funds raised through event catering goes back to support job training and hunger relief.

We also have additional programs, but all centered around our two core areas.  A Food Rescue outreach to encourage food retailers to donate excess food for hunger, instead of it ending up in landfills.  Community/Church Gardens and gleaning programs with local growers to increase the healthy produce we can provide.  Culinary and nutritional education for consumers.  Volunteer engagement for education and advocacy.  All centered on "Feeding the Hungry and Changing Lives".
