Our Mission

Equine-Assisted Therapies is dedicated to providing therapeutic riding and equine-assisted activities to children & adults with special needs so that they may improve physically, mentally and emotionally. We envision a place where abilities are strengthened, where activities lead to self-confidence, and each person can experience life without limits.

Equine-Assisted Therapies of South Florida (formerly Horses and the Handicapped), Inc. (EATSF) was founded in 1982 by Soroptimist International of Boca Raton and the Kiwanis Club of Boca Raton.

The organization began as a community project of the Soroptimist women. What was first thought as ‘too physical’ for a group of women, soon developed into a fully functioning program with the help of the Kiwanis Club of Boca and several other members of the local community. At the outset, the program served 6 children with special needs, using 6 borrowed horses in a public field in Palm Beach County.

Beginning as Horses and the Handicapped of South Palm Beach County in 1982, the organization and its stewards, which now serves the tri-county area, have remained vigilant to the ever-changing special needs community and societal changes.

Today, the organization is a premier accredited riding center as certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) International, placing it in the top 25% of centers worldwide. It has grown to serve more than 130 children and adults with special needs through four key programs: Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy, Equine-Facilitated Learning and Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy. Our small staff of five full time employees is augmented through the participation of 6 PATH-certified instructors and nearly 200 volunteers that help carry out our mission.

EATSF currently maintains a herd of 12 horses who serve as the core element of our programming. Our facility resides on a 5.25 acre parcel of land owned by Broward County Parks and Recreation that includes the Therapeutic Learning Center, a covered arena, 12-stall barn, and five paddocks conveniently located at Tradewinds Park North in Coconut Creek.
