Thank you, everyone! We have achieved our goal with a final donation from East Lansing Aquatics Parent Organization, and our new equipment is  See more

THE STORY:

Short version:

*We are raising money to purchase two swim power racks to help with training for swimmers and water polo players. They are like a in-water Nautilus for swimmers and water polo players.

*We are also raising money for eight starting block back plates with side grips. This helps swimmers get off the blocks faster and will make the ELHS pool even more desirable and competitive for hosting large, district and state-wide meets.

Longer Version, what's happening at the ELHS pool/ELHS Aquatics:

The East Lansing High School pool currently serves our school and surrounding communities in a variety of ways. It is the home of the ELHS boys’ and girls’ high school swimming and diving teams. In 2016 our boys were ranked number 1 in their state-division for team GPA, and the girls were ranked number 2 in their state-division. The boys’ swim and dive team received “gold medal” recognition from swimoutlet.com, where they were ranked 6th in the nation for team GPA, with an impressive team average of 3.82. In 2016 one of ELHS’ female freshman divers was the Lansing State Journal Diver of the year, was the CAAC Blue Diving Champion, and placed 14th at the State Meet. ELHS boys’ team also sent two relays to the State meet in 2016, as well as one individual swimmer, who made state cut times in an impressive six separate events.

Our excellent pool is also the home of the boys’ and girls’ Holt/East Lansing cooperative water polo teams. The boys’ team last year was ranked in the top ten of the state, and for the first time ever, they were a contender to qualify for the State finals in November. Nine East Lansing boys received Academic All-State honors from the Michigan Water Polo Association last year, maintaining a 3.75 average while participating on a varsity water polo team. Nine East Lansing girls received the same honor. Both the girls’ and boys’ teams were designated by MWPA as Academic All-State Honorees.

The physical education classes at ELHS use the pool and so do many teams (such as cross country and football) for the purposes of cross-training and injury prevention. It is also home of our middle school swim team, run by Trojan Aquatics and coached by Ron Marsh and Laura LeDuc. Last year we had nearly 90 participants on our middle school swim team, grades 5 through 8. This year, the Trojan Aquatics fall swim program at Hannah has tripled in size, and we anticipate equaling last year’s 90 participants on the middle school team in 2016-17. 95% of the participants are ELPS students. The middle school boys won the league meet in 2016, and were second in 2015. (The league is made up of CAAC schools.) The middle school team sent three boys’ relays and five individuals to the MISCA meet (which is the middle school state meet). The three boys’ relays placed 13th, 9th, and 8th in the state.

Our middle school program is experiencing tremendous growth, and this impacts our high school numbers. Our girls’ team this year had 34 girls, more than have participated in many years. The addition of a middle school diving program has introduced more kids to the sport at a younger age, and that will in turn increase diving participation at the high school level.

The East Lansing High School pool is the home pool for Trojan Aquatics throughout the year, including the summer months. It also the facility of choice for Raptor Water Polo Club, which offers training and club opportunities year round for East Lansing, Okemos, Haslett, Holt, Dewitt, Grand Ledge, Mason and Williamston student-athletes who are interested in playing water polo. The ELHS pool is also the home for Spartan Diving, the premiere diving club of mid-Michigan. The ELHS pool is also used by our community—for master’s swim and kayaking classes. Our pool was also recently used by Michigan State University swimming for a dual meet when there was a problem with the MSU pool.

These rentals by Trojan Aquatics, Raptor Water Polo Club, Spartan Diving, and the City of East Lansing bring a valuable service to East Lansing students, East Lansing residents, and our surrounding communities. All of this growth and achievement taking place in the beautiful ELHS facility is exciting and we would like to make these improvements (Swim Power Racks, Starting Block back plates with side grips) for our athletes' training, and also to make our pool more useful and competitive for larger district and state-wide events.
