THE STORY:

A Brief introduction:

Pakistan ranks at number 2 in the number of children out of school. The primary cause of this is poverty followed by the Government's negligence to eradicate this menace. According to the statistics issued by the Government only 57% of Pakistan's population is educated. Seems bad? The worst is this: The criteria set by the Government for a literate person is whether he/she can write their name. How does 57% sounds now?

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) reports on the alarming situation of Education in Pakistan:

Who we are:

This is a student led initiative with the aim of eradicating illiteracy from the slums in mind. This movement has been formed as a channel for prospective works of welfare. We aim to bring about effective action through the students themselves.

Everyone who works with us are volunteers themselves. Our goal is simple: to trespass all societal barriers between the have and have-nots and create a platform where class and wealth become irrelevant in front of something much more important: Education.

People working with us are those who believe in grabbing the moment and not putting off things till tomorrow. We do not debate on who is to blame for all the problems till out throats run dry. We celebrate the beautiful side of Pakistan while working on the ugly side till we can appear a revolutionized nation instead of a fading one.

Our work:

We have set up a small school in a slum with what limited funds we had. We provide free education to all children living in the slums, children who cannot afford to go to school, who can't even afford 3 meals everyday. These children usually end up working for the small scale industries where they are treated worse then bonded labour. Besides teaching them we also provide them with daily lunch and fun activities which encourages them to learn and make a difference.

These children are extraordinarily intelligent the primary reason being that they face hardship in ages when most of us cry over not getting to go to Disneyland. They just need a direction and that is what we hope to give them.

When we set up a small school in the slum the number of students who enrolled were much more then what we expected. Everyday they show up with bright faces ready to learn something new - something exciting, which motivates us even more. All the teachers are volunteers who are themselves studying for a undergrad or a postgraduate degree.

What we need:

With the funds generated we would be able to build a modest 4 classroom school (in the slum) equipped with the modern teaching facilities. Starting modestly we hope to grow and expand this school to every area which needs us. These funds would help us support all the children who wish to study. This would include their books, copies, stationary items etc. The student who shows extraordinary talent would be awarded a year long scholarship into the best private school in the city. If he/she performs extraordinarily over there as well the school then itself would award a scholarship to the student on a need basis. We hope that other volunteers will join us as well to fulfil their social responsibility being lucky enough to have been educated in a country where more than half of the population is illiterate.

Your funds would help eradicate illiteracy in a country where there corruption and extremism is at its peak. This would eventually help us put a stop to all this nuisance. An educated person always thinks and acts rationally. We hope that with your cooperation we would be able to succeed in our ambition! :)
