I have the honor of being the Past President of the Board of Directors for the Ronald McDonald House of Nashville and would like to ask for your support again this year for the 25th annual Calls for Kids Telecast. The telecast is the major fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House and will be held on Nashville’s News 2 on Saturday, April 16 from 7-10pm, hosted by Neil Orne, Justin Bruce, Dawn Davenport, Samantha Fisher and Eric Egan.
The Ronald McDonald House is supported 100% by the community so your consideration would be greatly appreciated. Our Mission: The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville is to “keep families close” by providing essential resources and a "home away from home" for families of critically ill children receiving inpatient or outpatient medical care at Nashville area hospitals.
The primary programs run by Ronald McDonald House Charities are the 32-bedroom Ronald McDonald House and the Ronald McDonald Family Room on the 5th floor of the Monroe Carell, Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, both offer a place for parents and family members to relax, refresh and experience comforts of home while staying close to their sick child. These families stayed at the House an average of 18 nights and were here because their children were being treated for cancer, organ and bone marrow transplants, heart disease and surgery, premature birth, other surgery, infectious disease, respiratory problems, trauma, chronic disease, burns, and other critical illnesses. The House requests that families pay $15 per night but the primary goal is to keep these families together and the House never refuses service because a family is unable to pay. In 2015, 91% could not afford to pay anything. Unfortunately, the occupancy of the House in 2014 was 99% with a daily wait list of 10 families with an actual cost to RMH for each stay per night of $83.
The House is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, the Family Room is open from 9 am to 9 pm each day and both are supported by 7 full-time and 1 part-time staff members and more than 200 active volunteers. The Ronald McDonald House is a home, providing hot meals, laundry facilities and a place to rest. It has all the benefits of a house, such as a playroom, library and kitchen. It has the responsibilities of a house, allowing families to take pride in the establishment by taking part in daily chores and helping volunteers with projects. More importantly, the Ronald McDonald House provides an environment of emotional support from staff members, volunteers and other families, who are going through similar circumstances.
Since the House opened in 1991, over 14,000 families have stayed at the Nashville Ronald McDonald House, and in 2015, 608 families were served. These families came from all of Tennessee's 95 counties and 66 counties in Kentucky, as well as 41 other states, two U.S. territories and 14 foreign countries. More than 375,000 individuals have been served in the Family Room, which serves all families with a child in the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, regardless of whether or not they are staying at the Ronald McDonald House.
