Bob Blacker

Growing up in Scituate, MA. Eric volunteered his time as a camp counselor for the Scituate Recreation Department. It was unknown at that time, that nine years later his positive influence and dedication to the children of Scituate would still be going strong within the recreation department.

At 15 years of age, Eric was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare malignant round cell tumor most commonly found in teenage boys. His chances for survival were a mere 30%. Amazingly in August 2009, after a six- year battle of his life, Eric was cleared of this disease. However, just a few short weeks after this miraculous news, Eric was critically injured in a diving accident at the beach.

His father Mark was on duty at the Fire Department and was called to tend to this accident. Only upon his arrival did he realize it was his son who had been injured. Eric suffered severe fractures of the C1 and C2 vertebrae and shattered his C5 vertebrae in his neck. This trauma left Eric paralyzed from the chest down; a quadriplegic.

Medically, Eric faces unfavorable odds of walking. Through an astounding support system of friends, family and community, there is always hope that Eric will walk again. Physically, psychologically and medically, Eric is truly facing the biggest challenge of his life – again – as he fights to regain some feeling and function in his arms and legs. Eric is currently at home doing out patient therapy at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston and is looking to go to a research & rehab center out of state.

Eric’s family faces a daunting financial need associated with his care and recovery at a time when they are most focused on his health and well-being. As one can imagine, much of his recovery is not covered by insurance thus, putting another large stress on his family.

Eric is a source of inspiration for our entire community and beyond. This young man has touched lives both young and old. Through his exceptional example he has made all of us stop and realize how important it is to “seize” each and every day! It is now our turn to give back to a family who has given so much to all of us. We deeply appreciate any support that you can give in this effort to assist Eric in his recovery. Please Donate if you can.

There is also a night out in Boston at the House of Blues in Boston on Friday, Aug 6th, 2010 to raise funds for Eric.
