Believing in yourself is how it starts. On January 5, 2014, I saw a public announcement about heart disease and how to prevent it. I was 296 pounds and smoked 2 packs a day. I didn't swim; I floated. I wouldn't ride a bike unless it had a motor and only ran if I was running from trouble. I joined a gym that night and told myself that I must go for 30 consecutive days. By the second week, I had such huge blisters on my feet I duct taped paper towels on them so I could still walk on the treadmill. I knew if I used the blisters as an excuse, I would never have continued. I changed my eating habits to a healthy lifestyle. I'm now down 100 pounds and smoke free. I work out daily, have done many 5Ks, 10Ks and two triathlons. This summer I'm doing three triathlons, 1 marathon, a 25K and several 10Ks. In August 2017, I plan to complete my first IronMan.
I want to swim the Mackinac Straits to show others that if you believe in yourself, you can accomplish great things! When we find something great in ourselves, we need to give it away to others so they can have it, too. So not only do I want to motivate others, I want to raise money to help Habitat for Humanity, an organization that helps so many Michigan residents.
