BENEFITING: THE SAMARITANS
EVENT DATE: Apr 17, 2017
It's no secret that I love to run and I love to talk about it.
On April 17th, I will be running the Boston Marathon for the first time. I'm running for a cause and it's an issue no one likes to talk about - depression and suicide prevention. Millions of people struggle daily with mental illness and thoughts of suicide. Mental illness has impacted so many of us either directly or through someone we love.
My sister-in-law Meredith is the volunteer President of The Samaritans of Rhode Island, an agency established in 1977. On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, I am training to run the Marathon to help raise awareness of this worthy charity that provides crisis intervention, grief support and suicide prevention education free of charge to those in need no matter where they live.
While located in Rhode Island, in 2016, The Samaritans website hosted more than 108,000 visitors from the USA and around the world. Additionally, the agency's crisis hotline/listening line volunteers befriend callers of all ages who just need someone to listen...sometimes the most important first step to getting care and help.
I am proud of the work Meredith and the volunteers of The Samaritans do every day and I am hoping you will help me help them continue to send the message that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable.
