Eric's IVLI fundraiser!
Organized by: Eric Shyu
Dear friends and family,
In just a day I will be leaving for Cedar Campus in Cedarville, Michigan for InterVarsity Leadership Institute (IVLI) from July 5th-August 1st! IVLI focuses on discipleship, intensive Bible study, fellowship with other student leaders, practical evangelism, and spending time with God away from distractions.
I applied to IVLI because throughout my life many people have told me that I’m a natural leader. However, I don’t think I’ve always been the best leader. I hope that through training and self discovery at IVLI, I will be able to better lead both my peers and myself towards a deeper relationship with God. My spiritual journey up until this point in time began earnestly during my freshman year at the University of Michigan when I joined InterVarsity, a national evangelical campus ministry. I grew up going to church but my faith did not really have any substance. I was an active part of our youth group though and it was definitely a community I was happy to have. Coming to college, I knew I wanted to find a similar community. My awesome sister Rosalie was part of the Asian InterVarsity chapter on campus so I decided to check it out too. As I began to get more involved with AIV, I realized that although the community was similar to my youth group back home, many people here took their faith more seriously and I was able to see them live it out in their everyday lives. Because of this, I wanted to begin to take ownership of my faith as well. This led me to go on a short-term missions trip to Detroit, Michigan, where a group of us lived in a church for a week learning more about the city and witnessing how God was at work there. We did a lot of volunteer work such as painting and cleaning. We were also able to visit a mosque and dispel previous misconceptions we had while learning to build relationships with people. I learned a lot about evangelism and giving back to the community after the missions trip so at the end of freshman year I decided to apply for AIV’s leadership team. This past year as a sports ministry leader, I experienced both hardships and reward. It was really satisfying to see people come out to support our IM teams and bond over sports, but there were times when it was really hard too. It was tough to balance all the teams along with school and relationships. I constantly had to rely on God. At the end of this school year, I was offered a position as a small group leader and throughout this process God gave me the opportunity to attend IVLI. I am praying that IVLI will be a place for me to grow in leadership in preparation for becoming a small group leader next year as well as a time for me to just grow as a person so that I can lead by example not only in small group but on campus as well.
I am extremely excited for IVLI and for the journey that God has in store for me. Looking ahead, however, I am anticipating a lot of challenges that may hinder my growth. I will need to learn to be disciplined and to take chances. I am usually scared about meeting new people so putting myself out there to talk to people I don’t know will definitely be a challenge. In addition, I am often quick to judge others just from the little bit I know about them so I hope I will learn to keep an open mind at IVLI. Would you consider partnering with me in prayer? Here are a few things that you could pray for me about:
Pray that I have an open mind to the ways God may be teaching me.
Pray that I learn to have the courage to put myself out there and to get to know people on a deeper level.
Pray that I can get to know God more deeply and that I can learn to rely on Him in all things.
IVLI costs $1289 which is a lot of money and not something I am able to pay for on my own. If you would also like to partner with me financially through contributions, please go to this link and give if you are willing and able!
Lastly, if you would like updates, feel free to text me while at IVLI. I don’t know how much access I’ll have to internet but I should have some phone service at least! Additionally, you can send me snail mail! But I don’t know what my address will be yet but I will hopefully find out soon. Just let me know if you want it! Thank you so much for all your prayers and support!
P.S. this picture doesnt show how excited I am :D
