Erik Bradley Halonen
July 30, 1977 – January 30, 2014
Erik Halonen lost his battle to melanoma on January 30, 2014. A small mole on the center of his back was diagnosed as stage 3 melanoma in August 2008 when Erik was 31. The melanoma had also traveled to three cells in the lymph node under his right arm. He underwent two surgeries and five weeks of interferon treatment at UCI. Both the dermatologist and oncologist attributed Erik’s melanoma to using a tanning salon.
On July 19, 2013, Erik was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. It had returned in four places. The worst tumor was wrapped around his liver, pancreas and aorta, thus eliminating surgery as an option and causing agonizing pain. He began a clinical trial including chemotherapy at UCI. His hospital visits became more frequent due to serious complications with his liver, but Erik battled on courageously. He was committed to beating melanoma and having a healthy life.
In just six months, melanoma took Erik’s life. He was young, fit, enjoyed eating healthy foods, and had tremendous faith which gave him strength to battle this disease. He was a very loving and thoughtful young man. His family is heartbroken. We truly loved Erik and miss him every day. We, his family and friends, thank all of those who honor him with their participation in the icuremelanoma 5K.
