As most of you know, I have been an active member of Cox Crew for the past four years. I was first introduced to crew through a “Try-It” summer camp prior to my freshman year of high school. The rowing terms and lack of skill at that time was overwhelming. I loved being on the water that day and decided to do something beyond your average high school sport.
During my freshman year, I was a coxswain, the man who guides the boat. It happened to come naturally to me. This gave me the foundation to be a good rower. I now wanted to row my sophomore year. I knew all the calls and how to follow the directions as an experienced coxswain. This was a year of learning technique, developing teamwork and strengthening my skills. This is when I realized that Cox Crew was so much more than a sport; it was a family. I spent three hours daily on the water with friends and coaches rowing, we loaded boats on Fridays in preparation for regattas on Saturday, and attended weekly pasta parties to “carb up” for the regatta. Cox Crew is unique because it has coaches and friends you can count on. As a junior, my hard work had paid off. I was part of the men’s lightweight 4 and took home first place at the EVSRA regionals, second at states in Occoquan and 11th in Bethel, Ohio for nationals. Without the vigorous coaching and equipment that I had, I would’ve never achieved these accomplishment. I am presently in my senior year and as my high school crew career draws to a close, my goal is to qualify for states and nationals in the lightweight four again. I am also looking for new opportunities with a rowing club to continue my love for the water and this sport. I know that my passion is infectious and it is a sport that I will continue throughout my life.
Rowing is an expensive sport which constantly demands maintenance and upgrades. Crew is a club sport that is not supported by school funding, making it difficult to purchase new equipment. My goal is to raise $350.00 to pass my love of the sport and a new oar onto a novice rower. Thank you for any support you can provide to the sport I love! Any amount big or small will make a difference. You can find me at a regatta on most Saturdays. You are welcome to come out to watch my team row and see what your donations support!
