THE STORY:

Ernst K. Zinner and his son Max G. Zinner took their first cello lessons together in 1992 when Ernst was 55 years old and Max was 4 years old. Ernst became a decent cellist, but Max ended up being a cello student at the St. Louis Symphony Community Music School (now the Community Music School of Webster University) for a total of 15 years until his graduation from high school. Max first was a student in the Suzuki program, then he became a cellist in the various orchestras of the Community Music School, i.e., the String Ensemble, String Orchestra, Young People’s Concert Orchestra, and Young People’s Symphonic Orchestra. He then joined the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and in 2005 was accepted into the most advanced program of the Community Music School, the Preparatory Program, for students who want to become professional musicians and apply to colleges like Juilliard or New England Conservatory for Music.

Because of the family’s involvement with the “Conservatory Preparatory Program” we will establish an endowed “Ernst Zinner Memorial Cello Scholarship” specifically dedicated to this program. This legacy will honor Ernst's remarkable life not only as a scientist but also as a good musician who was passionately involved in the cello education of his son. By donating, you will support Ernst's legacy as a patron of the arts and also give young people who might not otherwise be able to afford it the opportunity to pursue classical music as a career.

The Community Music School of Webster University’s Preparatory Program is designed to augment the individual music study of exceptionally talented string, woodwind, brass, and piano high school students who anticipate pursuing a career in music. Utilizing the vast artistic resources of the Greater St. Louis region, including the St. Louis Symphony, area University and other professionals, and the Community Music School and Webster University Faculty, the Preparatory Program offers high caliber instruction, performance opportunities and artistic mentoring in one comprehensive curriculum. The curriculum is centered on chamber music and also includes theory, ear training, music history and literature, performance classes, and special events such recitals, master classes, and guest lectures. The Preparatory program seeks to offer the resources and opportunities necessary to support tomorrow’s professional musicians. In tribute to my classmate and friend, Ernst. We began our studies at Washington University in the autumn of 1965. I have fond memories of those days. 1 year ago

I will always cherish my memories of our interactions, both in the laboratory and out. I am happy to find that, as is the case for Bob Walker, I can close my eyes and still hear in my mind exactly what it was like to hear their laughter. 2 years ago

In 1965 Ernst said he was going to wait until he was 80 to retire to a monastery and do all his serious thinking. Considering what he accomplished up to his 78th year, just think about what he could have done in his upcoming years! loving memory to a special friend of 50 years! 2 years ago
