Escuela Tortuga Athletes
Organized by: Anna Fishel
UPDATE: And an amazing update at that. One amazing anonymous donor made sure all the kids going to the national competition have brand new athletic shoes. Wow and thanks to the "shoe angel."
I was luck enough to see some of the kids walking home from practice today when they go their new shoes. They were carrying them as if they were national treasures. These kids are our national treasures, the future of Costa Rica!
We still need to raise money to help parents with the expense of going to San Jose to see their kids compete and provide crowd support. All contributions will make a difference.
Thank you for considering helping these amazing kids!
First, a little background information. Escuela Tortuga is in Ojochal de OSA, Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Located in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica Ojochal is a rural village where life is still simple. The average wage in this area is 1500 colones per hour, a little under $3US. Families are large, often with as many as 5 children.
The athletes of Escuela Tortuga had been working diligently to prepare for competition in a country wide sports performance challenge. The challenge is made up of 10 different events.
Two groups won at the local level and competed at the regional level. One group won! And it is well worth mentioning that the other group came in second.
How they won is by true grit and determination. Many of the kids competed barefoot because they do not own a pair of athletic shoes. Yes, there are still places in the world where shoes are a luxury.
Ten kids are going to be competing at the national level on May 28, 29, 30. This competition is in the San Jose area, about 4 hours from Ojochal.
As far as material needs, they need shoes, sweat pants and jackets (it's a lot cooler up there in the San Jose area than down here in the Southern Zone). There also is the cost of transportation, hotel rooms and food.
If you are a parent I am sure you know how important (and fun) it is to see your children compete. This fund will also help the parents of these athletes afford to go to the national competition.
Thank you for reading this and considering a donation to the athletes of Tortuga Escuela. I know everyone gets tons of request to donate to any number of causes. We all have our budgets. If you can even manage a small donation we will accept it with sincere gratitude. It all adds up!
And a footnote. The location of Alajuelita, San Jose, Costa Rica is the location for the national competition. The kid live in the village of Ojochal de OSA, Puntarenas, Costa Rica but it is not in this website's drop down list.
