BENEFITING: Girls on the Run - Chicago
ORGANIZER: Girls on the Run - Chicago
EVENT: Esprit De She Tri 2015
EVENT DATE: Jun 14, 2015
I’m excited to be participating as a SoleMate in the Esprit de She Triathlon on June 14, 2015. In the process of training for this event I will also be raising funds for an extraorinary cause! I am dedicating my race to this cause for several reasons! First of all, I believe its an extraoridinary program that is such a benefit for young girls! Secondly, running has done amazing things for me, my outlook on life and my confidence. It makes me so happy to be raising money for a cause that will help young girls also learn a love for running, confidence in themselves and compassion for others! The money raised may helped give a girl a new lease on life! I wish they had this program when I was growing up!
For anyone not familiar with Girls on the Run, please watch this short documentary film, The Finish Line is Just the Beginning (just 9 minutes) or keep reading!
Simply put, Girls on the Run is an afterschool program for girls ages 8-14 that transforms the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment, while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness. The mission is achieved by volunteer coaches who meet with the girls as a team twice per week for 12 weeks as they complete the curriculum which creatively integrates running, goal-setting and training for a non-competitive 5k running event with interactive lessons that encourage positive social-emotional and physical development among participants.
When girls participate in this program they exhibit improved self-esteem, body size satisfaction, and physical activity behaviors to a statistically significant extent. Girls also show positive changes regarding attitudes towards physical activity, healthy behaviors, and empowerment.
Girls on the Run-Chicago is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to inspire girls to be healthy and confident. Using a fun, experience-based after-school curriculum which creatively integrates running, the innovative program combines training for a 5k event with interactive lessons that encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development.
In 2015, GOTRC will serve more than 9,000 girls throughout Chicagoland. Of those 9,000 girls approximately 85% will receive financial assistance to participate in our after-school programming.
GOTRC strongly believes that every girl should have the opportunity to grow up strong, healthy and confident, which is why it is their promise to never turn away a girl from their program because of her inability to pay the program fee.
The SoleMates on Team Girls on the Run help GOTRC keep this promise to their girls because all funds raised by the team go to underwrite scholarship funds so that every girl has the chance to learn that she can do anything she sets her mind to.
This year, we are challenging ourselves to complete in triathlons, 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, marathons, and everything in between so that we can raise important scholarship funds for girls to participate in this life-changing program. Please help us reach our goal!
