Founded in 2006, Edible Schoolyard New Orleans (ESYNOLA) teaches children to make healthy connections through food at five FirstLine public charter schools in New Orleans. ESYNOLA works to empower generations of New Orleans children to build and maintain healthy relationships with food, the natural world, themselves and their community. We do this by integrating hands-on organic gardening and seasonal cooking into the school curriculum, culture, and cafeteria programs.
ESYNOLA involves students and the school community in growing, harvesting, preparing and enjoying food together as a means of awakening their senses, cultivating an environment that promotes a sense of pride and responsibility for our land and natural resources, and developing a love of fresh, seasonal foods. We teach over 3,600 classes and host over 70 special events to 3,100 children and their families in five public, open-enrollment charter schools each year. ESYNOLA is a signature program of FirstLine Schools, a New Orleans-based charter management organization that creates excellent schools for students disadvantaged by racial, economic and social inequity.
All donations will be matched by Newman's Own Foundation, and will directly support garden and kitchen education at FirstLine Schools.
