ESYO's 2016 Playathon: A Marathon of Music on Feb. 6, 2016 at Crossgates Mall, Albany, NY!
What is Playathon? It’s an annual fund- and friend-raiser for Empire State Youth Orchestras’ (ESYO’s) music education and performance program for young musicians from the greater Capital Region of upstate New York and western New England. Musicians collect donations from family and friends and supporters contribute on-line before Playathon day. On Playathon Day (Feb. 6) ESYO musicians, in ensembles large and small, will provide a day-long, free concert for shoppers and passers-by at Crossgates Mall. Shoppers show their appreciation for the music by tossing dollar bills down on the musicians! They can also bid to win the conductor’s baton and actually lead the orchestra! At our musical petting zoo (courtesy of John Keal Music), kids from one to ninety-two can try out that saxophone or flute or violin or trombone that they have always wanted to play.
Why Playathon? To ensure that all eligible musicians can join our program, ESYO keeps tuition low and provides many need-based scholarships. Low tuition creates a financial shortfall that Playathon helps cover in order to pay for everything that goes along with training young musicians and producing about 30 public performances each season. Almost 400 youth participate in ESYO’s program as members of our nine performing groups or in our inner-city, El Sistema-inspired, music education program.
Last year YOU helped us raise MORE THAN $35,000! Will you please help us again?

About Empire State Youth Orchestras: Winner of three prestigious national awards from ASCAP, ESYO is an umbrella organization comprised of two full symphonic orchestras, a wind orchestra, a string ensemble, three percussion ensembles, two jazz ensembles, and an inner-city music training program. Started in 1979 with a single orchestra of 81 young musicians, ESYO now counts almost 400 students from eastern New York and western New England in its membership. A not-for-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors, ESYO provides high-quality music education and performance opportunities to young musicians and helps them develop leadership qualities while also teaching them the importance of making a positive contribution to society. ESYO is well known for its Youth Orchestra’s participation in CBS 6’s Melodies of Christmas (benefit concerts that support the pediatric oncology program at Albany Medical Center). ESYO ensembles give approximately 30 public performances a year, including a free concert for seniors and concerts for young people. In 2013, ESYO was named Tech Valley Nonprofit Business Council’s Nonprofit Organization of the Year (for organizations of fewer than 75 employees) in recognition of ESYO’s positive contributions to the vitality of the region.
