ETHIOPIA HUNGER CRISIS
Organized by: Berkley Williams
The Ethiopian hunger crisis is escalating and now is the time to act to avoid a full blown famine like the one in 1985 that took the lives of 200,000-400,000 people. The children are at highest risk and currently there are estimates of appox. 500,000 children who are severely malnourished. During the famine of 1985 very little attention was given to Ethiopia until the media started to uncover the magnitude of the situation. The US jumped in and many other countries as well. The song "We are the world" was created and a mass of famous singers joined together to raise money to help those starving to death. The government kept quiet about the famine until it was discovered. When people in mass started to give donations it helped some but it was to late. Ethiopia has a history of severe droughts. 80% of people in the country depend on agriculture to feed themselves and now due to changes in global weather combined with the effects of El Nino they are not getting the rain that is vital to survival. Two years of drought is taking a toll on the peoples lives. Even if the rains return now it will take a long time before things normalize. Now Is The Time To Act.
