BENEFITING: ETHIOPIA Reads
EVENT DATE: Oct 06, 2013
Hi!! Running and library books, libraries and running....these are my favorite things. As I endeavor to run a marathon in all 50 of the United States I also want to do something to help others. I've chosen to support a nonprofit called Ethiopia Reads.
Ethiopia Reads was founded by an American woman who lived much of her early life in Ethiopia in 1998. It started with the goal of providing much needed library books for children but has grown in its mission with a focus on schools, libraries, young athlete education and mentorship and educator training.
This organization is important. Literacy rates are less than 50% and Ethiopia is the the second most populous African country. These programs and projects are reaching areas long without educational resources. Take a look at their website for further explanations of the good work being done.
Ethiopia Reads strives to keep administrative costs low, approximately 7.5% of the budget. The organization has partnered with many organizations and companies. In addition there is a lot of volunteer support and fundraising. The idea of providing schools and libraries is a value shared by most people so I hope you will consider making a donation.
My next marathon is in Minneapolis, the Medtronics Twin Cities Marathon. Ethiopia Reads is a charity partner with this particular marathon so I'm hoping to raise a good amount.
