EVENT DATE: Apr 15, 2015
We are so blessed to have such great family and friends who want to give us gifts, but we don’t need very much. As you know, we are very committed to helping improve the world; sharing in that work would mean so much to us. Please consider donating to one of the following organizations as your gift to us. Really, it would mean a lot to share the work together in celebrating this exciting day.
Here's why we picked these charities.
Books Through Bars
Eva found her home in Philadelphia in the office of Books Through Bars (BTB). James is wearing a Books through Bars shirt as this is being typed. The very first time James went to visit Eva, their second stop was to volunteer for five or six hours at Books Through Bars. So it was kind of like our first Philadelphia date. James’ overwhelming love of reading plus Eva’s obsession with prisons make this a great choice for donating. Books Through Bars is an all volunteer run non-profit that mails free books and educational materials to incarcerated people in the mid-Atlantic region.
Partners In Health
Regardless of your political opinions, you can agree that the state of healthcare in much of the developing world leaves a lot to be desired. Partners in Health – profiled in Tracy Kidder’s book Mountains Beyond Mountains and led by Dr. Paul Farmer – is one of the most efficient and well-regarded medical charities in the world, and focuses on treating endemic TB in Haiti, Rwanda, Russia, and around the world.
Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society (PAWS)
We both love kittens (but particularly Eva), and we can't get one because of the terms of our lease. Please save one--or several--for us! Feel free to visit your local animal welfare society instead of PAWS.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation
The Electronic Frontier Foundation is a civil libertarian group whose goal is to protect your right to use the Internet (and other modern technologies) free from undue influence by governments, corporations, or anyone else. Their goal is to defend the Internet as the greatest democratizing invention since the printing press. Among other things, their work with DJB in Bernstein v United States1 probably made James's job possible.
Hey, there had to be at least one super-duper nerdy one in this list, right?
