BENEFITING: The Cameron K Gallagher Foundation
EVENT DATE: May 05, 2017
My name is Evelyn Ivey, and I'm currently an 8th grader at Robious Middle School. Over the past several years, I have watched my brother shave his head for an organization he is passionate about. Last year, I decided that I wanted to shave my head as well, but wanted to raise $13,000 to represent the 13 years of happiness and healthiness that I have been blessed with. Most of the participants only raise a few hundred dollars (at most) to shave their heads, but a GIRL shaving her head, that’s another story!
In January 2017, I attended a holiday party for Girl Power Grants at The Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation (CKG). I’m an active member and on the leadership team of Girl Power Grants. This is an organization that has 100 girls, ages 12-17, raising $100 each to give away $10,000 to a local non-profit organization. We were having this party at the CKG Foundation since they were the first recipient of our grant, and we had worked with them over the past year. I truly fell in love with their mission, which is Cameron’s mission, to end the stigma associated with teenage anxiety and depression. Not only is this a global concern, but I have friends and classmates that have dealt with this, making it hit even closer to home with me.
I realized on that January night that I had my own organization that I wanted to shave my head for. I believed in my brother’s passion, but knew that I was called to be a part of Cameron’s story. Now I would be raising $13,000 for something I believed in. I quickly shared this idea with Cameron’s Dream Team, and another amazing moment happened. They told me about the 13.1 kilometer race that Cameron finished just prior to collapsing in her dad’s arms. I knew then that my new goal would be to raise $13.1k in honor of Cameron. I was and continue to be completely committed to raising this money and shaving my head.
And yes, $13.1k is a lot of money, but shaving my head is “worth it all,” as one of Cameron’s sayings goes. I believe that you and many other friends and family can help me accomplish my goal. Together we can do this!
