MEET AVERY | She’s a bright, happy 6-year-old from Metro Detroit who loves singing, swings and being a big sister, all despite a daily fight to keep her vision.
Born with a rare eye disorder, Avery had her first cornea transplant when she was 7 weeks old. Since then, she has had 26 eye surgeries and eight additional transplants to keep what precious little vision she has.
“Without her cornea transplants, she wouldn’t have ever seen. There was no chance for her to have any vision,” said Avery’s mother, Ann. “Her best experiences in life have been because of having sight.”
From the very beginning, Eversight Michigan was there to help Avery battle her disease by providing the donor tissue needed for her transplants and funding critical research that may one day lead to a cure.
Thousands of people across Michigan receive a sight-restoring cornea transplant with the help of Eversight Michigan, but the wait for a cure continues for thousands more.
OUR IMPACT | We fulfilled the wishes of more than 2,000 Michigan eye donors last year by recovering tissue for transplantation and research. And with the aid of 179 volunteers and 200-plus educational programs, we helped the Michigan Organ Donor Registry grow to 4.2 million registered donors.
WAYS YOU CAN HELP
$25 covers the cost of safely transporting donor eye tissue to a surgeon who makes vision a reality
$50 pays for the solution required to preserve one cornea for transplantation
$250 helps support research to find cures and treatments for leading causes of blindness
$3,000 grants the gift of sight to a patient who could not otherwise afford a transplant
MEET EVERSIGHT MICHIGAN | We’re a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) founded in 1957 that recovers, evaluates and provides human eye tissue for transplantation. Our mission is to restore sight and prevent blindness through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research.
OUR RESEARCH | Every year, Eversight awards $150,000 in grants to fund groundbreaking research for blinding eye diseases like macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma.
BEYOND MICHIGAN | Our five affiliate eye banks spread across the United States form a network that recovered nearly 12,000 corneas for transplant a year ago. Together, we make each other stronger and are working to identify and implement long-term solutions to international eye and vision problems by partnering with surgeons and health organizations in countries like South Korea and Pakistan to establish fully functional eye banks staffed and managed by local professionals.
And we need your help. Your donation to Eversight Michigan will restore sight and prevent blindness so someone like Avery can see a bright future.
