BENEFITING: Read Ahead
Since its founding in 1991, Everybody Wins! has been dedicated to providing young children a path to a better future by fostering within them an interest in reading, the first step towards literacy, academic achievement, and personal success. Its flagship program, Power Lunch, pairs adult volunteers with elementary school students to read aloud with them during the students’ lunchtime at their schools, at no cost to the participating schools. This past year Everybody Wins! reached nearly 1,500 children in 30 elementary schools throughout New York City and parts of New Jersey, most in disadvantaged, underserved neighborhoods.
The ability to read well is the most important component of academic achievement. Studies show that the first step to becoming a good reader is being read to aloud, beginning at a young age. Children who lack this experience are missing an important step in their development and are at risk for a lifetime of under-employment and economic dependence.
Almost half of all elementary school students in New York City fail to meet state and city reading standards. Schools located in low-income communities report even worse statistics. It is the mission of Everybody Wins! to instill in children a love of reading so they can fulfill their dreams and lead rewarding lives.
