I feel so fortunate for the many blessings in my life, most notably, my family. My husband (Matt, who is also running with me!) and my three little ones are the center of my universe and I have been fortunate enough to prepare for the arrival of my children a in safe, healthy, and "peaceful" way (we all know that labor ain't peaceful!). In this country, we tend to take for granted the many liberties and luxuries we are automatically entitled to, especially women (though we are still a minority group).
Up to 15 percent of all women who give birth, however, suffer life-threatening complications that, in most cases, can be treated with emergency obstetric care. The five major causes of maternal mortality—hemorrhage (severe blood loss), sepsis (infection), unsafe abortion, hypertensive disorders (pregnancy complications associated with high blood pressure, including preeclampsia and eclampsia), and obstructed labor—are all treatable if the woman has access to trained healthcare workers at a well-equipped health facility.
Every Mother Counts is a charity that works to improve maternal health (both prenatal and postnatal) and reduce maternal mortality rates. I will be running this half marathon with pride knowing that the money raised is benefitting this noble cause. Please help me in raising money for this great cause, to make strides against preventable deaths among women who should be looking forward to a new chapter in their lives.
