Every Mother Counts is a campaign to end preventable deaths caused by pregnancy and childbirth around the world. We inform, engage, and mobilize new audiences to take action to improve the health and wellbeing of girls and women worldwide.
Hundreds of thousands of women and girls around the world die every year from childbirth and pregnancy-related conditions that are almost always preventable. We don’t need new medical procedures or cures to prevent these deaths. We know how to save mothers' lives. What we need are the resources to reach them, empower them and enable them to get the healthcare they need.
Christy Turlington Burns founded Every Mother Counts in 2010 after completing her first documentary film, “No Woman, No Cry.” It covers a subject she’s been passionate about since she became a mother in 2003. Immediately after her delivery, she experienced an unexpected and potentially life-threatening complication that was managed efficiently by her midwife and obstetrician. But she realized what her same complication could mean for women without access to pre and postnatal care and created the film to educate people about those risks.
Every Mother Counts was established to help people across the country connect to the issue of maternal health. We are committed to helping to raise awareness so that more people know about this challenge but also about the potential we have to make it a tragedy of the past. We are committed to creating monthly actions that can connect people to the issue—whether it be through helping us to spread the word, organizing a cell phone drive, buying a product or running a 5k—there are countless ways you can make a difference in the lives of women around the world. We invest in life-saving programs around the world directly helping women in need of care. So far we have programs in Uganda and Haiti but are adding new programs all the time.
In 2012 Every Mother Counts incorporated as a 501(c)3 organization. It’s through the generous support of people like you that we’re able to do the work that will save mothers lives and make Every Mother Count.
