BENEFITING: Every Mother Counts
ORGANIZER: Every Mother Counts
EVENT: DR: Healdsburg 2016
EVENT DATE: Oct 29, 2016
On October 29, 2016, I will be running a half marathon to benefit Every Mother Counts (EMC). EMC is a non-profit organization dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for every mother. Surprisingly, maternal mortality rates around the world--and even in some states in the U.S.--have risen sharply in recent years. According to EMC's research, distance is often the biggest barrier to a woman and her family obtaining the medical care they need. EMC hopes to not only increase awareness, but to also make the vital connection that so many pregnant women live far from health services around the world and that distance does make a difference.
Simply put, I want to run so that others don't have to.
As all of you know, I am a mother myself, and I have three beautiful, healthy children. I was blessed during each of my pregnancies and immediately thereafter with excellent medical care. It never occurred to me to be concerned about not having access to life-saving emergency treatment for myself or my babies, if the need had arisen. But this is a luxury that many women in the world simply do not have. EMC's efforts seek to meet this need through practical ways: training birth attendants in Haiti, offering emergency support and supplies for traumatized expectant mothers in Syria, providing solar-powered electricity to a hospital in Tanzania, and even in the U.S., providing doula care and nutrition services to low-income, at risk expectant mothers in New York. You can learn more about EMC here.
Please consider supporting EMC's continued work by making a donation on my personal fundraising page. I have a goal to raise $500 to benefit EMC's programs before the date of the race. If I have just 39 friends donate $13 each (one dollar for every mile!), I'll meet my goal. Of course, you are perfectly welcome to choose whatever donation amount you like! :)
Thanks for your friendship and for your support. I look forward to running this race, and to updating all of you with the amount I and my fellow runners are able to raise for EMC!
