THE STORY:

My name is Sarah and I am the auntie of the two most beautiful girls in the world and the sister to the most incredibly brave woman that God could create. Why am I fundraising for the EWF and running in Phili? Below is something I wrote the day my sister, her husband and their two young daughters (one consumed almost completely with cancer cells, and one forced to play the role of a sibling to someone who cancer was trying aggressively to kill... for the second time) boarded an early a.m. plane for an emergent flight to Philadelphia, to try and save Sophia’s life. As if the first 3-year leukemia battle wasn’t REAL enough, the second one was genuinely gunning for her; it was gunning for us all and this time I truly feared that this demon might win. I’ll never be able to adequately describe all that Sophia and her/our family have been through for it’s simply impossible. Life will forever be separated into ‘before’ and ‘after.’ I can say however, with the utmost certainty, that she is CANCER FREE AND ALIVE today because of cutting edge, UNREAL medical discoveries such as the car-T cell therapy that she received in September. The EWF is devoted to continuing funding for more cures like the car-T, to END childhood cancer once and for all. The governments 4% funding will not save these beautiful children, but we will. What further incentive do we need? None. Thank you all so much. ~Sarah—————— MAY 2017 “Not even the world's most talented writer could begin to put into words what the last 5 weeks have been like for our family. An old nightmare brought back to life. As I described to my husband (as he must deal with experiencing all of this while hundreds of miles from home), yesterday was the most heartbreaking, gut-wrenching, terrifying and somehow most beautiful day of my life to date. This incredible family of mine gathered, as one whole heart, to send my sister and her family off to the prestigious CHOP (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia) in order to save our Sophia's life. I keep praying and hoping to awaken from this nightmare but we all know far too well that it's real and that this cancer has forever tainted all that we know. I am however, so incredibly grateful for the spirit of our family; for the way we somehow manage to face and fight this with laughter and ridiculousness and support and endless, suffocating love. I am grateful for the ability, because of my family, because of Sophia's blunt resilience, to have a reprieve from the tears and the 'whys' and the fear and the anger. It is because of them, and above all because of Sophia's and my sister's unreal bravery and strength, that I am able to get out of bed each day. I am so unbelievably thankful. Here's to family and fight.” ———————What is the EWF? Emily Whitehead is a 3-time leukemia survivor. She was the first child in the world to receive a breakthrough T-cell immunotherapy to finally beat her leukemia. Emily is alive today because of cancer research. We saw firsthand how cancer research is saving lives; however, there are still children losing their lives every day because of limited treatment options for high-risk patients like Emily. Children who have their cancer return are harder to treat because their cancer becomes resistant to standard therapies. Cutting edge treatments like the T-cell therapy are needed to help cure these children but funding is limited. Childhood cancer receives only 4% of the National Cancer Institute budget for research. Many researchers rely on grants from non-profit organizations and private donors who are dedicated to raising funds for childhood cancer research.
