Excited to Serve! Help me to do this more independently
Organized by: Sarah Sweeney
I have recently been accepted into AmeriCorps of Central Texas. I will be moving to Austin at the end of August and working with the Communities in Schools program. Communities in Schools surrounds students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The program is adapted to meet each community's unique needs. Children cannot learn at their potential when they are in crisis or face significant non-academic needs. Most students who drop out of school are dealing with multiple problems that present barriers to their education; whether it be at home, in school, or within their community.
Being a part of AmeriCorps is something that I have wanted to do for a long time now. Having the opportunity to give back is something that is so important to the core of who I am as a person. In the past I have been unable to fully share that passion with others due to barriers with accessibility and using a wheelchair. For the first time in a long time , I don't feel that my cerebral palsy or the fact that I use a wheelchair will be looked at as something negative, but rather , but rather something that I can use as a tool to help empower others.
However, in order to meet my needs, other tools and equipment need to be in place in order to increase my physical independence, making it easier for me to serve the community.
