EVENT: CrowdRise Holiday Challenge

EVENT DATE: Nov 18, 2013

Exodus Refugee Immigration, Inc. (Exodus) is a private not-for-profit refugee resettlement agency dedicated to assisting refugees build new, self-sufficient lives in Indianapolis, IN. At this time, Exodus is seeking support for its Mental Wellness Program through the CrowdRise Holiday Challenge.

Exodus’ Mental Wellness Program was created due to a growing number of refugee clients who have experienced torture and other traumatic experiences. Currently, Indianapolis neither offers dedicated mental health services for refugees nor offers centers that specifically provide multicultural or multilingual services to survivors of violence, torture, persecution or trauma. Exodus’ Mental Wellness Program incorporates the interconnected psychological, social, physical and spiritual needs that affect refugee adjustment and mental health. The program is comprised of several key components: an initial qualitative brief mental wellness needs screening; clinical services (including individual, group and family psychotherapy offered on-site and referrals to area mental health providers such as therapists, psychiatry and other medical services as needed); incorporation of mental health concepts into Exodus’ Language, Cultural Orientation, and Readiness for Employment classes; weekly women’s program classes; eco-therapy sessions; monthly workshops to be provided to clients on various mental health topics; training opportunities for local practitioners to increase the capacity of providers; and staff training on mental wellness concepts to be able to provide holistic case management and have access to staff therapist for consultations regarding client situations. Most recently, the Exodus Mental Wellness program began holding art therapy sessions for refugee clients; the classes are given by an intern who is well-versed in the specific technique.
