BENEFITING: MERCY CARE CENTRE FOUNDATION
I am so excited that you have decided to see what I am up to this year. Many of you may know that as a child, I grew up in East Africa. My parents' were missionaries at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Everyday of my childhood, I woke up with Mt. Kili in my backyard. It has long been a dream of mine to summit the mountain. In 1999, I was close but fell short of reaching the summit.
This past summer, a dear friend of the family passed away suddenly. It was his dream to climb to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. His two daughters asked if I would climb with them and I was excited for the opportunity.
In preparing for the trip, a friend’s dad suggested I climb for a charity and to raise awareness. After much thought, I have decided that my dream might be able to benefit others. I have many charities that are dear to me, but I decided to pick two to focus on.
The charity page you are on is the New Mercy Care Academy. This is a school we have supported for 17 years. It is located in the Slums of Nairobi, Kenya in Mathare Valley. This small school provides hope for the children who have nothing. The children are fed, educated, and loved. In the midst of such despair, this school is a beacon of light for these children. Your donation will help provide food and supplies that the school needs to provide for these children.
The other charity is the American Cancer Society. If you wish to donate to this charity, please go back to my profile page and select Expedition ACS at the bottom. In the past few years, cancer has affected many people in my life. I have cried over the tumor that took my pastor too soon, discovered new strength as my mom fought Esophageal cancer, learned compassion as I found out how cancer was consuming the lives of others in my family, developed a new awareness as my mother-in law continues to diligently fight skin cancer, and supported a dear friend of mine who fought colon cancer. Cancer touches too many lives. Your donation will help with research and progress to helping find a cure.
All of the donations go to the Charities. My climb is being funded by me.
I am so grateful for your support and will be documenting my dream as I go. If you want more details about my Climb or the Charities, please let me know. I am happy to share with you.
