Experience Camps are one-week camps for boys and girls who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling, or primary caregiver. It's a place where kids can laugh, cry, play, create, remember the person who died, or forget the grief that weighs them down. It's a place where they can feel "normal", because everyone there has been through something similar and understands what it's like to lose someone important to them. It's a home away from home. And just about everyone will tell you..."It's the best week of the year".
Personal Experience with Experience Camps-
I volunteered at Manitou Experience during one of the final weeks of last summer, and I can truly say that it was already one of if not my favorite 'experiences' that I have ever been apart of. I have attended Camp Manitou for the past six years and had heard about Manex several times, but I can guarentee you that words on a page cannot do a justice as to how special the camp is. The volunteers were amazing people, but the kids were what made the camp so special. I could tell how special the one-week camp was to these kids just by seeing the sparks in their eyes when they arrived. From that moment forward, everything was a blurr. I have not been a part of a community with more love and energy than I had throughout my week volunteering at Manitou Experience. Hopefully I can go back soon so I can continue to get to know the amazing human beings that makeup the campers and volunteers at Manex. With the money that we raise, we can continue to help more kids that are struggling with grief and spread Experience Camps throughout the country. So please consider donating if you are able to at all!
