ExtraSpecialTeas is an exciting new Main StreetTeahouse bringing People and Special Needs People together over Tea. We’re building an Extra Special Tea House in downtown Great Barrington, MA –Spring of 2015- which will be 'owned and operated' by Special Needs People and inspiring the Power of Purpose within everyone who encounters it.
As a non profit 501(c)(3) Tea House –open to the public- we will provide vocational training and therapy services for young adults with autism and other special needs aging out of school. Participants will learn the power of teamwork while feeling confident through the support of their peers and others. Under the supervision of teachers and volunteers, they will receive the therapies they need plus the opportunities to fulfill certain operational roles in the teahouse to the best of their ability. For some, the skills learned at EST may be a stepping-stone for future employment, and for others, this friendly and accepting work environment will provide a stimulating day program where they continue to learn and master social and vocational skills.
Inspired through the true Power of Purpose, both People and Extra Special People will find new found fulfillment not afforded thus far by an operating retail establishment. The Tearoom area will create an irresistible haven for consumers to enjoy their tea experience, while each special needs server and operator will feel the thrill of helping create their experience. Each will be carefully monitored and supported with the belief that they can perform roles with or without assistance. We feel this mutual sense of contribution, goodwill and fulfillment will result in a magical environment that brings community integration to a new standard.
The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has already approved our application for financial support for the ongoing operation AFTER ExtraSpecialTeas opens it doors. That's where YOU come in. Your tax-deductible donations will help us open the doors to a new integrated world where special needs adults are included, not excluded, and everyone in the community at large is inspired by joining hands, together!
And, this year we're doing something really HUGE on #GivingTuesday, December 2nd, as a part of the Challenge. We can't give away all the details quite yet but organizations like The NFL, March of Dimes, Robin Hood, Uber, 92Y, Eventbrite, It Gets Better, UNICEF, United Airlines and The UN Foundation are all involved. It’s going to be amazing!!! Even if you don't win a grand prize, you get to keep the money you raise. So, so awesome.
