We did it!
March 21, 2017
BENEFITING: NYU Langone Medical Center
EVENT DATE: Mar 19, 2017
On March 19, 2017, I will be running the NYC Half Marathon to raise money for TeamFACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures), a cause that hits very close to home. As you may or may not know, this past year, my son Matthew (age 6) was diagnosed with Generalized Convulsive Epilepsy. His first seizure, which occured during a vacation last winter, was a terrifying experience for our family. In the weeks that followed, we were fortunate to get a quick diagnosis, but his seizures escalated in frequency and length. He was having convulsive seizures on a weekly basis lasting upwards of eight minutes (8 MINUTES!!). After a 5 day stay in the hospital, we learned he was also having 30-40 non-convulsive seizures an hour (called Absence Seizures, which just look like he's spacing out for a second or two.) Since then, it's been a whirlwind for our family. Between the confusion, the fear, the sadness and the anger, we were fortunate to have been quickly turned on to FACES and Dr. Devinsky at NYU Langone's Epilepsy Center. It's been nothing short of a godsend! The support, information and the overall community have been a true light for us as we go through this journey.
I started running last year to clear my head. I never wanted Matthew to see me cry, so I would get my tears out on a run. The miles have started to add up so now I want to use the miles to give back to the team at the NYU Epilepsy Center. Maybe the money I raise will get us one step closer to a cure for Matthew.
I know everyone asks for donations, but this one is near and dear, so I hope you can find it in your heart to contribute to this great cause.
TeamFACES is proud to run in the 2017 NYC Half Marathon among thousands of others as they race on behalf of important, meaningful causes. Our athletes will compete to spread epilepsy awareness and support for the mission of FACES while racing through the streets of New York City on March 19th! FACES (Finding a Cure for Epilepsy and Seizures) at NYU Langone Medical Center is dedicated to helping people and families living with epilepsy, through research, education, and clinical and community support programs. Funds raised by each runner will benefit research efforts to improve epilepsy care, educational materials and cost-free seminars, scholarship opportunities, family initiatives, and various events hosted by FACES throughout the year.
