EVENT DATE: May 02, 2015
As a scholar and president of the Italian cultural Association Precart (www.precart.net), I am dedicating year 2015 to support projects for formerly trafficked women, both in Italy and in the U.S.
In the U.S., I want to support the Oakland based MISSSEY.ORG. their annual gala fundraising event coming up May 2nd.
This year I am also trying to connect some of my students to volunteer and work locally in the Bay area for Misssey.
THE FIRST $300 will go to take my students to the MISSEY GALA DINNER, in May 2015.
In Italy, I am fundraising for an ongoing photographic project, where formerly trafficked women take photography classes taught by professionals and then organize art shows featuring their creative work in the cities where they were trafficked to. The first photo exhibit inaugurated in Ferrara, in March 2015 and it was a great success.
Art as a form of therapeutic reworking of the trafficked women's experience, seem to be fostering their self-confidence and the idea that they are worth of attention because of their artistic skills. The greatest success of the photography show was to see the women presenting their artistic work to the community with pride and joy.
To give you a bit of context, you probably know that Italy has beeno going through a major economic/debt crisis started in 2009. This has very negative effects on immigrants who live in Italy, especially women, who became increasingly vulnerable to sexual exploitation.
On a less dramatic level, most foundations and Italian cultural institutions have drastically reduced funding for cultural projects such as the one carried out by photographer Ippolita Franciosi and Letizia Rossi with the trafficked women.
For all these reasons, we ask your financial support to reach our goal of 1000 euros to use in 2015 for workshops and art exhibits in Italy.
We are grateful for any amount you can offer. for now, thank you, grazie mille!!
