Faces of my Land

An Incentive to preserve the Quechua Language for a new generation

What is Fito's intention with the project ' Faces of My Land'?

To capture photographically the faces, lifestyles and landscapes of a dying race of people; the elderly people who remain direct descendants of the Incas, living a subsistence lifestyle such as their forefathers lived since time immemorial. They reside in the tough mountain climbs of Cusco in Peru and its surrounds, right up to the heights of Machupichu.

These people are in the minority in a culture that has its roots in the distant past with the Inca civilization. This includes the last speakers of the language 'Quechua' which is based on the ancient Inca language. These elderly folk never learned to speak Spanish, nor took on the introduced ways of the various ' new comers' to Peru.

As Fito is a professional Sound Engineer as well as a professional photographer, it is Fito's intention to record as much as possible of that spoken language, with its songs and stories and fables, before this generation of old folk, who still can speak the language, die out completely.

(It is Fito's intention to play such recordings as sound scape for the exhibitions that will be subsequent to his completion of the photographic project).

Now, in 2011, there are only a few remaining elders who speak only 'Quechua' and live the culture and lifestyle of the forefathers. The younger generation have tended to move away from such a subsistence lifestyle and shun speaking the 'old timers' language in favour of seeming more modern by speaking Spanish. This leaves only a brief window of opportunity for Fito to fulfil his aims. It may be no more than two or three years before the last of these old people are gone for good.

Why this project?

Fito, though born in Lima lived half his life in Cusco. His parents were born and bred in Cusco and Cotahuasi, 'Arequipa' respectively. They are natives of that culture which is now dying out, and Fito is therefore personally aware that there is an urgent need to make a photographic record of this last generation.

The Inspiration

Fito's father was born in Cusco in 1926. He told his son tales of the old times and the even older ways of his people. Fito, like most youthful off spring assumed that not only his own father, but all the people, faces, sounds and stories would always be there. In 2007 Fito's father died. So Fito, of course, realised this was not so. He also realised that in order to capture the fast disappearing images, textures and sounds of his birthright, time was and is of the 'essence'.

Fito has been living in Australia since 2006 but his mother is still alive and living in Lima. She also has a wealth of stories, contacts and memories to share and Fito wants to be sure to not let that opportunity pass by.
