IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services; New Haven, CT) does the important work of resettling displaced and persecuted individuals in the state of Connecticut by providing the critical services necessary to help refugees along the road to self-sufficiency. The recent crisis in Syria has highlighted the need to open our hearts and our minds to the plight of these families. I hope you will join me in supporting this important work. As a scholar of Irish studies, I am keenly aware of the devastation wrought by Ireland's Great Hunger (1845-52), a horrific famine that decreased Ireland's population by nearly half and created the Irish Diaspora community we see in the United States today. The word "fáilte" means welcome in Irish. I'll be running in memory of the roughly one million lives lost during the famine, for those who survived it to make a new life here in the U.S., and in the hope that refugees from all over the world can come to Connecticut in the coming years and achieve the same fate. THANK YOU!
