Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity is building an infill sustainable urban community of 18 affordable, energy efficient townhomes on 1.9 acres in the City of Lancaster (PA). Each home will be matched to a family in need of a decent, affordable home, and they will spend 500 hours building their own home in partnership with community volunteers and donors. Each family is also required to completed financial education and homeownership counseling through Tabor Community Services to prepare for the responsibilities of owning a home. At completion, the homes are sold at cost with affordable financing, typically a 0% interest mortgage through Habitat. The mortgage payments are then recycled to support future projects. Lancaster Habitat will tithe to build one home in Latin America and the Caribbean for every 2 homes built in Lancaster County.
