Faithful Servant Mission

Serving God & Changing Lives in Costa Rica and Panama

Faithful Servant Missions, Inc. (FSM) is a Christ-centered 501c3 nonprofit organization that began in 2006 following a one-week mission trip to San Ramon, Costa Rica. We deeply felt God’s call to make a difference in the lives of the people of Bajo Tejares, a small barrio outside of the town. This community is made up primarily of Nicaraguans who fled political persecution and economic instability, seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Initially, the Costa Rican government provided for them; then they became “outsiders” and a burden for the people of Costa Rica. Abandoned and poor, these people lived in wooden shacks and slept on dirt floors. With an unemployment rate hovering around 80%, most were surviving on day labor when available, prostitution or drug trafficking.

FSM identified three major areas of intervention to break the cycle of poverty: physical, educational and spiritual. The Board of Directors purchased four acres of land at the entrance of the barrio, and completed construction of Centro Comunidad Cristiana in August of 2008. A multipurpose church building, parsonage, recreational facilities, and an education building to run after-school tutoring and mentoring programs were initially built.

The physical needs of the community began to be met on a case-by-case basis, ranging from hosting medical clinics to repairing homes for residents of Bajo Tejares. We began to meet educational needs through one on one academic support programs for over 150 children. The University of Costa Rica began to sponsor night classes for adults. We began to see parents learning to read and graduating from elementary school and high school. Centro Comunidad Cristiana began to minister to the spiritual needs of the community through weekly support groups for mothers, fathers, pre-teens, teens, as well as church services on Sundays for children and adults alike.

The mission in Caisan, Panama developed from a longstanding relationship with the church there. In 2007, approximately four acres of land was purchased with the purpose of building an orphanage. Several different orphanages in Panama were visited and meetings with the Social Services Director for Chiriqui Province were conducted. It was decided that a cottage format of six children per home was preferred over a larger building. This allows children to be in a more natural setting with one “tia” for each small home. Two cottages have already been completed. The homes are three bedrooms and two bathrooms (approximately 900 square feet). More cottages will be added over the next several years as labor, teams and financing are available.

In addition to the orphanage, approximately fifty local, impoverished families are fed every month. Most of the families are Ngobe-Bugle Indians, the indigenous population of Panama. These families receive staples such as beans, rice, salt and other items that are delivered to remote areas around Caisan, some by horseback.

Our driving mission in both Costa Rica and Panama is to serve those whom society has forgotten. We seek to improve the physical, educational and spiritual health of those we serve. Our overall vision is to help people develop a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
