EVENT DATE: Jun 27, 2016
One of the major global impacts of climate change will result from rising sea levels, effecting coastal regions around the world. In the United States no place will be more affected than Miami; built on old coral reefs from an old shallow sea, the entire city is below 10 feet above sea level; it also happens to find itself in a state governed by a denialist administration. The challenges are great, but if we can rise to meet them under such unfavourable conditions then the lessons we learn can help spread a message of possibility and hope far and wide beyond the city.
A small but highly motivated group of individuals are successfully engaging communities across Miami with climate education, tools of practical action and hope for the future. Together they bridge educational institutions, local government and grassroots activism and have been working tirelessly over the last few years to bring the issue of climate change to the forefront of life in all quarters of Miami. Central to this effort is education.
This summer, between June 27th and July 1st, led by Liberty City educator and community leader Ms. Paulette Richards, a team of people is coming together to provide climate education and practical hands on opportunities - including planting native vegetation and learning about the natural world close to home - to 30-40 children from the historic Liberty City neighbourhood. The funding we seek will help pay for hosting and materials and to help meet the ambition of providing the students with nutritious locally sourced meals throughout the week.
