THE STORY:

FAMILIES LIKE YOURS Campaign RECOGNIZES outstanding foster parents, RECRUITS new foster parents, and RETAINS existing foster parents.

For more than a decade, we have highlighted outstanding foster parents in short documentaries and hosted regional screenings. We are seeking your support to continue to produce SHORT DOCUMENTARIES & host A REGIONAL SCREENING highlighting outstanding foster parents of DC and the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia. Production is projected to begin in the fall of 2014 with the regional screening being held in June 2015.

Why is this important?

On any given day, there are thousands of special needs children and teenagers in the foster care system in and around our nation’s capital. Children in foster care have suffered abuse or neglect by a parent, relative or family friend. They are forced to pack up their things, leave their birth homes, and are placed in foster care. Because of the hardship or maltreatment they experienced at home, the trauma of being separated from their birth parents, and the uncertainty they face as they enter the foster care system, children in foster care have many needs. These children need a family to go to – families like yours.

At a moment’s notice, foster parents open their doors, homes, and hearts for an unspecified number of weeks, months, and years. By opening their homes and hearts, foster parents play a vital role in helping children and families heal.

“If they came from a hostile environment, if they came from a dark place, I want them to find the light in my home.”-- Sujey Daniels, foster parent

Who are foster parents?

Like the children they serve, foster parents come from a variety of backgrounds. They are people that live in your neighborhood. They are people you see every day.

Foster parents demonstrate certain qualities and attributes essential to fostering. They are attentive, tenacious, patient, and empathic. Foster parents have an extraordinary willingness to grow and learn, and an equal capacity to love and let go.

Who are we?

We are a recruitment resource for foster parents in the National Capital Region to help encourage prospective parents to become foster parents. Families Like Yours Campaign is a part of Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments,a non-profit organization in Washington, DC that partners with local and state child welfare agencies to achieve positive outcomes for youth in foster care.
