OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH
Think domestic violence doesn’t happen here? In DuPage County . . .
5 people lost their lives due to domestic violence last fiscal year
200,000 people are victims of domestic violence
29,000 children witness domestic violence in their homes
Think doemstic violence doesn't impact you? With 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men being victims, someone you care about is experiencing domestic violence. The costs are many including children that can’t thrive in school because they are scared about their parent’s safety, the lost days from work because the victim was hit the night before and can’t show up to work with a black eye, the inability to focus because they are reliving the trauma from yesterday. Conservatively, each year DuPage County loses $20 million in lost employee productivity and wages as a result of domestic violence. $20 million dollars that is not reinvested in the community through the purchase of goods and services.
Last year, 1500 people had to be turned away from Family Shelter Service because demand far exceeded our capacity. Please help us help more.
