BENEFITING: Family To Family Network
ORGANIZER: Family To Family Network
EVENT DATE: Jul 01, 2017
In September 2016 I had the opportunity to begin a board fellowship with Family to Family Network as a part of the Rice MBA Board Fellowship Program. Since joining the Family to Family Network I have experienced all that this organization does for the community. At the heart of Family to Family Network is a desire to support families whose childern have received a disability diagnosis.
Many families, upon receiving a disability diagnosis for their children, retreat into isolation because the systems they find themselves involved with are overwhelming and frightening. Each system, whether the education, social service, or health care system, presents challenges due to the complex rules that must be followed in order to gain help. Add poverty, cultural diversity or limited English proficiency on top of that and often families and youth with disabilities have a difficult time finding reliable sources of information and support.
That's where Family to Family comes in - supporting and empowering families and youth with disabilities as they navigate the complex education, health care and social service systems. By providing information on the various systems, referrals to community resources, training events on various disability topics in the office, community and at our annual conference, a website devoted to providing accurate & consistent information on the special education process, a Guided Transition program, as well as a Leadership & Advocacy training program; families and individuals with disabilities have an opportunity to network and learn from one another.
By working together, we can create communities where ALL children belong and excel!
