THE STORY:

For those who don't know, I was 275 lbs and couldn't run 1/2 mile when I decided to start training for a marathon in October 2012.  I had never run a 5k, and hadn’t participated in any athletics since being a thrower (shotput and discus) in high school.  I trained all last winter, lost over 50 lbs, and ran my first marathon on April 6. When I finish the Boston Marathon this April (just over a year later), I will have run 16 full marathons plus a 72 hour footrace covering 112+ miles, plus training. I've run marathons on a blown Achilles, broken foot, dislocated foot, and in the middle of a bad case of food poisoning at Disney World. My family has also endured with me and we welcomed my daughter Anna into the world between marathons 7 and 8. (My wife rocks!)

I am married with 3 beautiful children.  My wife, Kristin, is a stay-at-home mom who takes care of 4 kids- the 3 little ones plus me!  My son Sam is 8 years old and in the 3rd Grade.  He does Karate and loves his Kindle and Pokemon/Yu-gi-Oh cards.  My first daughter is Amelia, who is 4 and in preschool.  She is Daddy’s girl and loves ballet and gymnastics… and pink!   The baby girl is Anna, who just got her first 2 teeth.  We attend the Salvation Army Worship Center on Sundays and are active in the work of the Salvation Army.

I am the Director of Midwest Operations for GMS Mine Repair and Maintenance, as well as Pioneer Conveyor.  I am also the Managing Partner at Pioneer Supply and InbySupply.com in Madisonville, KY.  All of these businesses are underground coal mining related, so naturally, I am a big advocate of America’s best form of electric generation, Coal.  I also have a Master’s Degree in Clinical Social Work which I used in practice with the mentally ill, substance abusers, and homeless before I got involved in the coal industry.

I truly hope that you will support FamilyAid Boston through my run and feel good that you have made a positive contribution to people who need it more and more everyday.

About FamilyAid Boston:

FamilyAid Boston works with families at all stages of the journey from homelessness to housing by providing homelessness prevention assistance, emergency shelter and permanent, affordable housing in conjunction with support services. Along the way, we work with families to identify and address the problems that led to their current crisis. Our goal is for the families who we serve to remain housed, stable, and able to provide for themselves long after they leave our care.

For the last three years, FamilyAid Boston has partnered with the John Hancock Non-Profit Marathon Program to raise $107,280 to help homeless families.

Last year's marathon team raised a record $50,000 to help homeless families. This year, we hope to exceed $65,000 with your help!
