The Family Crisis Shelter opened its doors on September 10th 1979, and was the first domestic violence shelter in the state of North Dakota to open their doors. Since this time FCS has evolved to include the counties of Williams, McKenzie, and Divide with the tri-county area covering 11,000 square miles in northwestern North Dakota and the only shelter within 130 mile radius to specifically assist victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and teen dating violence.
We are a 24 hour 7 day a week crisis intervention program for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and teen dating violence that provides information, referrals, education, advocacy, housing and emergency shelter and peer support groups to victims and their families.
Northwestern North Dakota saw a dramatic increase in victim's of violent crimes in the last seven years, in part due to the changing landscape. Mineral exploration (the oil boom) and the population growth that came along with it has impacted our small shelter in a multude of ways. Wiliston itself had a 30 percent growth between 2012 - 2015.
