BENEFITING: Family Scholar House, Inc.
EVENT DATE: Nov 02, 2013
Family Scholar House is a Louisville, KY-based non-profit organization that is changing lives, families and communities through educaiton. Our mission is to end the cycle of poverty by giving low-income single parent students the support they need to earn a college degree. We do this by providing a comprehensive continuum of services for both student parents and their children. All of our participants have experienced homelessness or unstable housing, and 95% of our families have experienced domestic violence. Further, 73% are the first in their families to attend college, and 40% are the first to graduate high school. However, all our single-parents come to us to become better parents and to guarantee a more secure future for their children by breaking the cycles of poverty, homelessness and dependency for their families.
Family Scholar House has the privilege of partnering with KaBOOM! to build a new playground for our youngest scholars, ages 5 and under. Birth to age 5 is a critical time in a child's development and growth, and giving children the best possible start in education and in life is the most important thing we can do in helping them reach their full potential, explore their interests and realize opportunities to be contributing citizens of our community. Through our children's programming we work with children to be kindergarten ready and on track to begin school on the same level as their peers. This playground will serve as an opportunity for our kids to develop their imagination and creativity within their own safe place. Play is such an important aspect for children, used as a way to express themselves and begin socializing with kids their own age. However, many of our children have not had a space of their own to play due to living in violent neighborhoods and unstable environments.
With your help, we can provide this safe space for play for our youngest scholars and give back to them an important piece of their childhood.
