BENEFITING: FAMILY SHELTER SERVICE INC
This October, during Domestic Violence Awareness month, Family Shelter Service will focus on bringing awareness to the fight to end domestic violence. But we can't do it alone.
A caring community makes our important work possible. Whether we are helping a shelter mom and kids rebuild their lives after domestic abuse, conducting a dating violence prevention program in the schools or assisting a terrified woman in obtaining an Order of Protection.
And we know that when these individuals are safe, the entire community benefits. Working together we'll make it safer one and safer for everyone.
How does Family Shelter Service keep everyone safer?
On the playground at school, seven-year-old Ian heard a boy talking about bringing guns to school and shooting kids and teachers. Ian and his mom had been attending our Mom and Kids Support Group, and during a recent session, he learned about the important role that the police play in our community. That night he told his mom to call the police immediately. “They are safe people,” he told her. “We learned that in group.” Later, many guns, as well as gun trafficking were found in the home of the boy who had threatened to bring guns. “If this had happened a month ago, before we went to Family Shelter Service,” his mother said, “Ian might not have told me.”
