“Homeless means me – it’s when you don’t have a house so you wait in line for a bed and if you can’t get one you come to Fannie Barnes. We got to come to Fannie Barnes so we always have a bed. “ This quote from eight year old Tamia whole heartedly described her perception of being homeless and a resident at Urban Strategies Fannie Barnes Residence. Tamia represents one of the over 69, 545 homeless students in NYC schools living in homeless shelters like those provided by Urban Strategies- Fannie Barnes.
Urban Strategies, Inc. is a forty three year old jewel of Brooklyn. Since 1970 this community based social service organization has been unbendingly committed to the fight against homelessness.
In an effort to continue providing much needed service for Brooklyn’s low income and homeless populations, Fannie Barnes will be hosting it’s first Annual Fannie Bowl Fundraiser at 300 New York in Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers. Proceeds from this charity event go towards enhancing the literacy and youth based programming provided by Urban Strategies– Fannie Barnes as well as assisting the organization in the continued provision of services.
Paul Miller, the director of Fannie Barnes is depending on the success of this fundraiser to continue servicing the community. He believes, “ Our job as community organizations is not to just give a man a fish but to teach a man how to fish. That’s how to revitalize your community and prevent homelessness.”
Please visit www.fanniebowlfundraiser.org and involved by creating a bowling team, sponsoring Fannie Barnes, donating online, or donating an item to the silent auction that will be held at the event. Partners are always needed in the fight against homelessness. By donating $5 or more, partners make a huge contribution towards creating more after school services for Brooklyn youth, acquiring a van to transport shelter and after school program youth from school, buying supplies for homeless youth and families, feeding homeless families, funding social services and programming initiatives, and decreasing the number of homeless one family at a time.
Thank you for your time and we hope to see you on Friday, August 2nd!
