The Cause:

There are eight million children living in orphanages worldwide—even though 80% of them are not orphans. Most children are institutionalized because their parents are poor and cannot adequately provide for them. And while many institutions are established with good intentions, more than 80 years of research proves that raising children in orphanages harms their health and development, increases their exposure to abuse and puts them at risk of future criminal activity.

Put simply, children need families, not orphanages.

Lumos, a non-profit founded by J.K. Rowling, has the proven solution. Donations to this Crowdrise campaign will go to support Lumos’ work in Haiti, where Lumos is working with the government to close orphanages, reunite children with families and put in place safe, alternative care within families. In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, funds are needed in Haiti right now to support emergency relief efforts, help children who have become separated from their families and prevent harm.

We will use your funds to:
  • Provide emergency care to children in Haiti, including access to food and water and preventing child trafficking in the wake of Hurricane Matthew
  • Trace children’s families
  • Provide support so that families can care for their children at home
  • Provide trained staff and carers to care for children and families on their journey back to family life
  • Raise awareness of the harm caused by orphanages

  • Lumos will report to all donors to this campaign on progress and results made from this donation.

Join us, and together we can create a world where children have the families they need and the futures they deserve.

I admire you Rowling. You never cease to inspire me, with your writing as well as with the good example you continuously set for kids all over the world including me. Most of my friends and family think I'm crazy for re-reading them and tease me about it, but I will never forget the day I opened a Harry Potter book. It was five years ago, and back then I hated speaking English and hated reading it even more. I had always loved reading in Spanish, it was fun and easy and it was the way I knew. I wanted to go back home, were the family was close, and the people lively, and they played the right football. And most of all, they spoke my language. Moving to America made me shy and defensive about my speech and my accent. Then in fourth grade, my class had to pick a book for a report. My teachers specifically told me; no books in Spanish. My big sister, then told me about the books she read when she was my age. She told me about "Harry Potter y la piedra Filosofal". She even said she met him once (Not Daniel, literally Harry. And I believed her because I was an idiot). She told me she had an English copy and I was delighted. She let me borrow it and I read it non-stop. I had never before that day loved a story so much. I continued to read the series and retained a profound inspiration from them. Now I'm in highschool, and I love reading in all the languages I know (I still prefer Spanish though). And yes, I would love to go on this New York trip because I am completely and utterly in love with all of your works and grateful for all they have taught me. Thank you for your stories; they showed me the importance of imagination and love. Se como es no tener esperanza, así que gracias por darme a mí y al mundo eso. Por favor sigue siendo esa luz. ~EM 3 months ago
