NICA recently purchased 100 acreas near the Pacific Ocean on the West Coast of Nicaragua. We are finishing up our topographical survey, and beginning our master plan. We plan to start construction in February 2013.
Rural towns surrounding the farm do not have access to a fresh produce market nearby. The closest market is over an hour away. No farms exist in this region, and no informal markets exist for the sale and trade of vegetables, making them very expensive for locals. To improve nutrition and access to food, NICA will build a community farm project. We will house our Volunteer program there, grow vegetables, fruits, raise chickens and cows. The food will be sold to local residents and donated to local schools.
NICA will build a formal market at the road to develop commerce for the area. NICA will donate community farm land to those who want to grow produce for their families. NICA will teach locals how to grow in containers at their homes. NICA will produce a growing kit to award as a benefit in the IAP program, valued at $70 in exchange for community service.
