Benefits the Hungry of Lower Merion Through the Ardmore Food Pantry
Is the Main Line a food desert? Most would say no. We have grocery stores within an easy distance from most homes, gourmet markets and wonderful restaurants. But for some in our community, food scarcity is a real issue. In particular, scarcity of access to local and organic produce on a regular basis. If you belong to a CSA (community supported agriculture) or are able to make the choice to spend a few extra dollars for organic or local farmer's market produce, you are one of the fortunate ones. Why should our neighbors have less access to foods that aren't laden with pesticides than we do? They shouldn't.
Please join us in supporting the Farm to Food Pantry Partnership. A partnership between Red Earth Farm in Kempton, PA www.redearthfarm.org, the Ardmore Food Pantry at St. Mary's Church www.stmarysardmore.org/ardmore-food-pantry and you, the sponsors, to provide a weekly bulk share of farm fresh produce at no cost to food pantry guests. The share will include enough produce to offer all the weekly guests at Ardmore Food Pantry fresh, nutritious veggies for the 22 weeks of the summer season. We estimate that the produce will provide vegetables for the equivalent of 10 families each week, with a goal of increasing that number if the project is successful, and the need apparent.
A single donation of just $45 ensures that approximately 1 family portion of fresh, nutritious, locally grown produce can become available to pantry guests and part of their meals for a month. For the Ardmore Food Pantry, that means adding much needed produce options and availability for their guests to choose from. It will also help support a local grower and farm that is within 70 miles of Lower Merion which, in turn, supports regional food security and open space preservation. Red Earth Farm is helping to subsidize the bulk share by offering it at a low cost.
" You should see the way the guests's faces light up when fresh produce is offered!" says one food pantry volunteer.
Together we can do this! Think local, support local, love thy neighbor as you love thyself. Give what you can and know that your donation will be going directly to Ardmore Food Pantry. This is a tax-deductible donation.
