FIT Rooftop Natural Dye Garden
Organized by: Caitlin Powell
AMOUNT RAISED IN PREVIOUS ROUND: $2000
Our CGI U Commitment to Action is to utilize the existing green roof at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to its full capacity by starting a dye-plant garden which also incorporates rain collection and composting projects. In turn, this will provide education to students from all majors about the benefits of natural dyeing on natural fibers. With the help of professional natural dyers from The Dogwood Dyer and experienced builders from Brooklyn Grange Farms, our goal is to plant the first crop in the Spring of 2014. Bringing these natural dyes and traditional practices back to the forefront of students' minds here in the big city, is the ultimate objective for this endeavor.
The Fashion Institute of Technology made a commitment to support sustainability in the curriculum and in campus infrastructure. All of our team members have taken related courses and our team leader is a member of the Sustainability Council (www.fitnyc.edu/sustainability). We developed this student-led project to expand the effort in a creative way.
